Quinacridone Violet is a captivating and enchanting pigment that belongs to the family of quinacridone pigments. These organic pigments were first developed in the mid-20th century, revolutionising the realm of colour with their extraordinary vibrancy and lightfastness. Quinacridone Violet, as the name suggests, falls within the violet spectrum, but its true allure lies in the complexity hidden within its seemingly simple appearance.

The story of Quinacridone pigments begins towards the end of the 19th century when the first Quinacridone compound was discovered. It wasn’t until 1955 when it was fully recognised when chemist Hans-Wolfgang Wende discovered a way to synthesize organic compounds based on quinoline. This discovery led to the creation of the first quinacridone pigment, Quinacridone Magenta. It wasn't long before these newly synthesized pigments found their way into the art world and many more Quinacridone hues were developed including our hero colour Violet!

Quinacridones combine the power of the staining pigments with the luminosity of the transparent pigments. They flow beautifully for extremely smooth washes, have an amazing depth of colour and can be reactivated easily while still wet but maintain their vibrancy

What makes Quinacridone Violet so captivating?

It has intense vibrancy and  boasts a deep, rich hue that sits somewhere between violet and magenta on the colour spectrum. Its radiant, almost fluorescent quality makes it a favourite among artists seeking to infuse their work with vivid and eye-catching shades.

While Quinacridone Violet shines on its own, it also plays well with others. It can be easily mixed with other pigments to create an array of captivating shades, allowing artists to expand their color palette and explore new creative possibilities as you can see below. We mixed our hero colour with a complementary primary green - Hookers green. Also a colour close to it on the spectrum blue - Ultramarine Blue to explore different cooling colours of Violet.

Quinacridone Violet and Hookers Green

When you combine Quinacridone Violet and Hooker's Green, as you see you generally get a range of beautiful earthy and muted colours, as the warm green of Hooker's Green can neutralize or tone down the intensity of the cool violet in Quinacridone Violet. If you mix Quinacridone Violet with a small amount of the Green, you initially get a muted violet or purple that leans more towards grey or brown. This can be useful for creating subtle shadows or muted background colours.

If you mix larger amounts of Hooker's Green with Quinacridone Violet, you can achieve earthy greens and olive colours. The ratio of the two colours will determine how warm or cool the resulting green appears.

Quinacridone Violet and Ultramarine Blue

When you mix Quinacridone Violet and Ultramarine Blue, you'll typically obtain various shades of purple, violet, and bluish-purple, depending on the ratio of the two colours.  If you mix these colours in roughly equal proportions, you'll get a deep, royal purple that combines the richness of Ultramarine Blue with the vibrancy of Quinacridone Violet. Adjusting the ratio of the two colours can give you a wide range of purplish-blue hues. More Ultramarine Blue will result in a bluer tint, while more Quinacridone Violet will lean towards a violet tint.

Combining Quinacridone Violet and Ultramarine Blue can create harmonious colour schemes as they are located near each other on the colour wheel. These colours are analogous, meaning they are neighbours on the colour wheel and naturally complement each other.
