Golden acrylic colours are known for their excellent quality, wide range of colours, and various viscosities. Viscosity refers to the thickness or consistency of a fluid or paint and Golden offers a range of viscosities from very thin to very thick, and each viscosity has its unique properties and uses. In this blog, we'll explore the different viscosities of Golden acrylic colours and their uses.

GOLDEN HEAVYBODY ACRYLIC

Heavy Body was the first paint introduced by Golden in the 1908s. It's a type of acrylic that is known for its thick, buttery consistency. It's one of the most popular brands of artist-grade acrylic paints and is used by many professional artists.

The term "heavy body" refers to the thickness of the paint, which is achieved by adding a high concentration of pigment to the paint base. This creates a rich, opaque colour that can be applied in thick layers or thinned with water or acrylic medium to reduce the consistency for a more transparent effect.

They can be used for impasto techniques, layering, and texturing. They are perfect for artists who want to create thick, rich layers of colour. You can use palette knives or hog brushes can be used with heavy body acrylics, as they allow you to sculpt the paint and build up layers of rich colour and texture.

Due to Heavy body acrylic’s impasto-like consistency, it’s one of the most versatile choices in the Golden range in which you can manipulate the consistency by experimenting with acrylic mediums such as Glass Beads, Pumice Gel.

FLUID ACRYLIC

Fluid acrylics are a much thinner consistency of acrylic paint than Heavy Body, it’s a similar consistency to that of heavy cream. These paints are highly pigmented and offer an extremely smooth, even application.

They can be used for various techniques, such as pouring, spraying and staining. They are perfect for artists who want to create smooth gradients and washes of colour. They can be mixed with other Golden acrylics to adjust the viscosity or add depth and texture to your work.

The Golden Fluid Acrylics are also an ideal paint for a canvas that needs to be shipped or moved around, because they expand and contract in different temperatures without cracking - the perfect paint for regular exhibitors!

They contain a retarding agent to extend the drying time which allows excellent spreading capability when painted wet-in-wet. As well as flooding areas with colour, High Flow Acrylics can be used delicately with a small, soft brushes for quite fine, particular detail.

HIGH FLOW ACRYLIC

High-flow acrylics are the most fluid in the Golden acrylic range, without any loss of pigmentation or colour strength. They can go directly from bottle to airbrush, refillable marker or dip pen and work great for drawing, staining, dripping, pouring, calligraphy and colour washes.

High Flow offers a palette that includes many single-pigment colours, as well as Fluorescent and Iridescent colours. While it acts like an ink, it’s an acrylic so it's compatible with other GOLDEN Acrylic colours and mediums.

As High flow has a similar consistency to inks the main difference is most inks are dye based where as these High flow paints are pigment-based meaning they are much more vibrant and resistant to fading over time due to being lightfast. Over time dyes are less stable so can fade.

SO FLAT ACRYLIC

One of Goldens latest developments is SoFlat - an Acrylic paint that helps artists create immersive fields of colour without the distraction of texture and glare that set new standards for matte, opaque, level colour. The paint has a flowing consistency, offering exceptional coverage and a levelling capability as it dries.

This unique combination of qualities can only be found in SoFlat Matte Acrylic Colours. SoFlat provides a velvety smooth, durable surface that is 100% glare-free. The advantages of SoFlat are extended by its compatibility with other acrylic paints and mediums, increasing the range of creative effects that can be achieved.

Opacity and coverage - When striving for that pure color effect, you need a paint that goes down evenly with full intensity in as few coats as possible. While some pigments are naturally transparent, SoFlat has a unique formulation that provides greater opacity from these colors than is normally found in acrylic paints.

Levelling - Perhaps the most distinctive quality, and the one that might be most unique to SoFlat, is the paints natural levelling quality. The paint relaxes after being brushed out, making it easier to minimise the appearance of brushstrokes for uninterrupted fields of rich matte colour.

Matte - Artists have always been drawn to the enigmatic quality of matte colour, and SoFlat delivers with a glare-free surface that allows the depth and intensity of each colour take centre stage.

Beyond their exceptional quality, Golden Acrylic Paints offer a world of creative possibilities for artists of all levels. Whether you're a beginner exploring the basics of painting or a professional artist experimenting with mixed media, these paints adapt to your artistic needs.
