UNSEEN FASHION FACES & FIGURES

Refocusing the lens of contemporary fashion illustration

London College of Fashion x Cass Art

London College of Fashion, in collaboration with Cass Art, is calling all fashion illustrators or figurative artists to submit artworks that go beyond the current norms and represent, in any way you feel, people of all shapes and sizes, backgrounds, cultural and ethnic origins, abilities and unique characteristics within a fashion context!

Fashion illustration is a long-standing form of clothing, accessory, beauty, figurative and identity communication dating back to the sixteenth century. Whether depicting fashion realistically or suggesting abstract ideas and forms, fashion illustration is a powerful imagination ignition, both informative and inspirational.

Not exclusively used to visually speak designer catwalks and seasonal looks, through the ages fashion illustration has highlighted cultural dress and detail, shifted perceptions of human physicality via proportion and silhouette, and documented significant societal style changes from historical garb such as royal attire right through to workwear. The point is, fashion illustration in all its variety is a significant media to visually speak through.

It’s a common conception that sartorial drawing and painting leans into stylised portrayals of people, often as slender elongated figures. Over the past two decades that trend has started to change. This project and subsequent exhibition aims to widen and further representational parameters and progress, through the art of fashion illustration.

Stilled Life Workshop by Faye Dobinson

More information

In this 2 hour workshop, the peaceful tradition of Still Life is turned on its head with a bizarre collection and arrangement of disparate/ different objects and textures, designed to explore editing, pattern and form. The arrangement will be so chaotic that you will find yourself selecting areas that interest you, and creating from those. What you select will be an indicator of what draws you in and inspires you.

By using assorted tapes, paint and pens from Cass Art, we push these mediums to develop both our understanding of them and our signature way of handling them. You will learn how to extend and create a colour palette for yourself with the basic primary colours, and how to exploit the different textures obtainable from acrylic paint that range from a watery wash to the thick and impasto.

Flux and Flow Workshop

by Francesco Poiana

MORE INFORMATION

In this workshop, offered in collaboration between Cass Art and London College of Fashion, UAL, we will begin by exploring the dynamic interaction between the mind, body, and brush.

Throughout the workshop, we will investigate the capabilities of inks and watercolours through a series of experiments with the media and its alchemical interaction with other materials.

We will try techniques to master their fluid and unpredictable nature, learning to work with these mediums to introduce elements of discovery and surprise into our art. By experimenting with different tools and application methods, we will uncover how watercolour and ink can bridge the gap between drawing and painting disciplines.

Figurative Abstract Workshop

by Martha Zmpounou

MORE INFORMATION

Join Martha, member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, in a 2-hour playful and experimental watercolour workshop. You will explore the properties of the medium and create works that combine abstract and figurative elements.

You will use photos and source material as a starting point, to play with water-based media and palettes. Demonstrations of various traditional and experimental watercolour and acrylic ink techniques will help you create fashion silhouettes by exploring how abstraction and figuration can work together. With guidance, you will experiment with the media’s qualities, their fluidity and transparency, and gradually work towards works that embrace happy accidents and bleeds. This layered approach will culminate in the creation of figures that emerge out of the juxtaposition of seemingly underdeveloped, abstract marks, with elements developed in detail.

From our new home at East Bank, the UK’s newest cultural quarter at the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, we’re forging partnerships, opening up opportunities, and creating connections with east London’s schools, community and industry. Our new home has brought all of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, from all of our three schools, under one roof for the very first time. In doing so, we continue to pioneer how we all consume and practice fashion. Use fashion business, media and design to shape culture, economics, and society. And through fashion, shape lives.
